Mount Vernon 1745

Our time in the Washington DC area continued but from a different spot in Maryland. We spent part of our time at an RV Park in Lothian Maryland which wasn’t too far from Largo. This location kept us close to a Metro stop as well as gave Izzy the ability to run free along the nature trail they had at the park. Squirrels were on alert!

Besides hanging close to the city and visiting the sites, we were able to see some of my co-workers as well. We met some for dinner a couple of times which was great and it was nice to get caught up with what they were all up to.

We did venture out from the city and stopped in Old Alexandria one day for a late lunch. They have a trolley that runs from the Metro station along King Street which is part of their historical district.

The other place we went in Virginia was George Washington’s Mount Vernon. He acquired this property in 1754 and spent the next 45 years of his life expanding his home to reflect his status as a Virginia gentleman.  Cindy came with us for the adventure who I had worked with for a few years.

The Mansion is detailed to look as it did in 1799, featuring furnishings owned by the Washington’s as well as period pieces. You tour the Mansion but are not able to take pictures but you certainly get a flavor of what their lives were like back then.

The grounds are maintained in such a way that you feel you are on a working farm. George Washington thought of himself first and foremost as a farmer. He was also a successful entrepreneurial businessman and had a whiskey distillery and gristmill that used cutting edge technologies in the late 1700s.

You could spend all day here with wandering through the grounds, gardens, and museum. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has done a great job restoring and maintaining the place. Well worth a visit if you ever make it to this part of the country.

We said so long to the nation’s capital area on October 14th and headed for another historical place in Virginia. Sorry you are just going to have to read about it in the next story!
