No Diving at Capitol Reef

Upon leaving Moab Utah we set our sights on Capitol Reef National Park.  We took State Route 24 from Interstate 70 with our destination of Torrey Utah which would be our new temporary home for a few days.

I was able to take a few pictures along the way to the park and then we took time in the park the next day.  Although it isn’t the kind of reef diving we enjoy in the ocean, it was an amazing journey through above ground reefs.  Izzy had fun exploring one area but we didn’t get much hiking in this time due to Steve’s foot.

Since we had a few days in Torrey we did some exploring around the area.  What is amazing is how quickly the scenery changes in just a few miles.  The local ranchers have a great view no matter which direction they are looking.

Our last day at Torrey, we drove to Boulder Utah to check out the Anasazi Village State Park. This location is the site of an Ancestral Puebloan habitation that researchers believe was occupied between A.D. 1050 and 1175.  They have a museum as well which is very well done and offers quite a bit of history.

I decided instead of cooking our last night we would go out to dinner at Café Diablo.  The restaurant is a unique southwestern affair and the menu was very interesting and inviting.  The food was wonderful and the presentation was a work of art.  Steve decided he needed pictures to show everybody but I am more inclined to believe he wants me to try and imitate it someday!

While finishing our meal we engaged a couple (George and Marilyn) in a conversation. They spotted Steve’s NIFC hat and said they had a house in Kuna they purchased a few years ago as an investment.  We had a great time talking and learned they were on a 3,000 mile loop on a motorcycle. This was the first time Marilyn had been on a motorcycle but she was having a good time!  Their trip will end back at their home near San Francisco. We hope to stay connected as we continue on our adventure.

This last picture is the view we will be leaving from the Thousand Lakes RV Park.  We aren’t too worried as we were told the drive along State Route 12 to Bryce is one of the greatest scenic routes!!

Hanging With Friends in Moab Utah

SIT landed at the Spanish Trail RV Park on the outskirts of Moab on Sunday April 14. This location and date were established before we started our adventure. You see Tom and Becky (close friends and next door neighbors) take spring trips each year with their motorhome and this time we could do the same!

Additional friends also met up there and it just turns out Steve, Izzy and I ran into Everett and Nancy at the Desert Bar out of Parker Arizona. We didn’t know each other then, but they were gracious enough to let Izzy hang out in their shade.  Small world isn’t it??

The first night there, Steve decided he wanted to seek revenge on Old Moe and set out to fish the Colorado.  So he loaded up his fishing gear and took off into the sunset. He found a spot, settled in and didn’t catch a thing. The water might have been just a tad too cold!
I think Steve was a bit bored while trying to catch Old Moe!

We began the week with a bit of touring the area.  We had a great tour guide, Phil, who retired from the Forest Service and has a daughter that lives in Moab so he has done a bit of exploring over the years.

Our first stop was Sego Canyon. The weather wasn’t the nicest but the scenery was great. We did a bit of hiking and exploring in the area.  Phil also took us to a brothel that he had been to in a previous visit. I won’t go into details, but needless to say it had seen better days as it had collapsed and was now just boards on the ground. That didn’t discourage us though. We kept looking around and Steve found remnants of a clay pot and we even stumbled upon an old cemetery.  Although evidence suggests someone still comes to visit the residents.

I think there might be hidden treasures!

We left Sego Canyon and headed to Dead Horse Point. Not sure why it is called that, but it had a killer view!  The weather could have cooperated a bit more but that didn’t preclude us from doing a little hiking and picture taking.
Hey is Old Moe down there?

We took advantage of the local golf course and managed to play with Tom and Becky, Bob and Karen Copes, and Phil and his daughter Karen.  They had just plugged the greens so we were offered to play for free. Now who couldn’t resist that deal, right!  We just won’t talk about our game!!

We were enjoying the time there but the weather just wasn’t to the warm marker yet, so Steve and I decided to extend into the next week to take advantage of warmer weather to do some exploring in Arches and other places.  Tom and Becky were leaving Sunday, so we still wanted an adventure with them. We decided to rent a Razor ATV for Friday.  So off we go!

We had a great time and stopped a few places to do some hiking.  Steve captured part of our trip on video when Tom was driving. I tried to upload it but it had issues so will keep trying and update the blog if I am successful.

Getting bounced around wasn’t enough for us, so we went to Monticello Utah to get bounced around on a golf course there. Now the course setting was quite beautiful, but the climate experience wasn’t quite so nice. Steve and I are normally fair weather golfers but we figured heck if Tom, Becky, Bob and Karen can do it so can we!   Next time we will stick with our fair weather philosophy as it didn’t feel good on our joints.  However we had fun!

Tom, Becky, Bob, Karen, Everett and Nancy all pulled up stakes Sunday to head back to Meridian.  We spent Sunday relaxing and cleaning the house.  Monday we headed to Arches National Park. What an amazing creation.  We stopped at the various places and I was able to get out and do some hiking. Steve and Izzy hung back and waited as Steve’s back wasn’t willing to hike much right now.  I took tons of pictures but selected just a portion of them for your viewing pleasure. These just don’t do it justice but you’ll get the flavor of the country.

The next day we took a drive along the Colorado River and found a road along Onion Creek (Bureau of Land Management) so we decided why not!  It was a neat place to stumble upon and Izzy got to get out and do some exploring along with getting her mile run in.  Unfortunately running in this area turns her white paws red.  Don’t tell her that, as she likes white much better!

When we got back to the RV park, Steve decided he wanted to take the motorcycle up a trail near the park and see if he could continue on the trail that we had taken the razor down late Friday.  Off he goes. Forgot to tell you that he thought it would be great to make a video of Steve’s Wild Ride so he strapped the GoPro camera to his helmet.  As he got to the spot where we turned around the razor (it appeared to end) he found the trail to continue.  So guess what? Yap, he kept going.  One would think no big deal, right?  Well as it turns out it was a big deal as he ended up catching his left foot (yes the bad ankle side) on a rock.  He forgot one minor detail about his motorcycle riding now as compared to before. His left foot sits farther forward on the peg since his ankle doesn’t flex.  Back to catching it on the rock, OUCH!  When I watched the video I didn’t hear anything that had to get bleeped out but it certainly hurt like *#@@!

He managed to get turned around and head for home. We doctored it once we got his boot off which consisted all of putting an ice pack on it and giving him some drugs.  I think he was just too scared to face me on the golf course the next day, don’t you?
I have a big ouch

I did play golf Wednesday with Steve as my driver and coach.  When we finished we headed for home to prepare the house for its next location.  We pulled out Thursday morning with Torrey Utah as our destination so we can explore the Capital Reef National Park and then continue on to Bryce and Zion!

Stayed tuned for SIT in Capital Reef NP!
